Product Description
Shapton Glass Ceramic Water Stones are the finest manmade ceramic water stones….period! This claim is based largely on two properties - the speed at which the Shapton stones cut and the edge they create. Shapton stones are designed to be harder, faster cutting, and denser than any other ceramic water stone on the market. Because they remove material quickly, the time required to hold a tool angle on the stone is reduced, making free hand sharpening much easier. Equally important to cutting speed is the consistency of the finished edge. The sharpest cutting edge is created by the finite intersection of two highly polished, flat surfaces. The finishing grits (16000 and 30000) of the Shapton stone system leave a polished surface free of the scratches creating a mirror finished, razor sharp edge. Each stone is comprised of a 5mm thick glass backing plate fused to a 5mm thick stone and measures 2-3/4 W x 8-1/4L. We recommend purchasing, and using, the Shapton stone holder. As it provides a secure platform and protects your stone when in use.

Well, that's all fine and good, but my edges weren't the super duper fine ones that make hand planes and chisels REALLY RUN. So, I ponyed up. I bought some good diamond stones. Now we are talking (Although, anything over 1000 grit uses a different binder that reduces the effectiveness of diamonds, so stick with 1000 and under on those). I was getting very good edges with my diamond stones and a strop. Inevitably, I started seeing the ever so slightly rounded edges on my chisels. It's the kiss of death on chisel tracking. So, back to the search.
I saw Mr. Cosman's 32 second routine. Could it be that simple? He uses diamond stones to shape and hone, then finishes with the Shapton 16000. Man, I've already spent a bunch of money on sharpening stuff that was substandard. Over $120? Wow, I can't afford that, or so I thought. I looked all over Amazon and found what I thought to be a generic copy. I had one of the generic versions delivered, only to find that it is absolutely junk. It's so soft that I could gouge a groove down the center of it all the way to the backing glass with just a few passes.
OK Shapton, I capitulate. Send me your $120 sharpening stone. It had better be good, I said to myself. Well, this thing absolutely blows me away. In a matter of a few seconds, I can take a mostly finished blade to insanely, incredibly, amazingly sharp. It polishes the edges perfectly, it's extremely hard and should last for many years, and is singly the best thing I've ever purchased to sharpen tools. I love it, and I hate that I love it, because I really didn't have $120 to spend on a piece of sharpening stone.
But, it is so worth it. I couldn't be happier. I said to myself, " you have to be kidding me... Is this thing really that good??"
Yes, I must admit, it really is. Check out Mr. Cosman's sharpening routine on YouTube. If you order what he uses, it'll last you the rest of your life, and you can get your tools sharp with amazing speed. I'd give this thing 10 stars if I could.
I have seen professional woodworkers use this stone, and decided to purchase it. I was very impressed with the results. Never before have the hairs on my arm “leapt” off this easily, and my planes are much easier to stay in the cut.
I’ve probably spent more than this stone on other methods, but I was trying to save $$, so I always went with a less expensive stone, or sandpaper. In the end had I purchased this years ago, I would have saved more.
If you need a sharp edge and are turned off by the price, save yourself some money in the long run and get this. You won’t be disappointed
Buy it if you got the cash, you won't be disappointed.

The problem was with the packaging, or lack of it. One thin plastic courier bag. The stone was chipped so I returned it. Received a credit then a few weeks later was contacted by a guy in the States saying he'd recieved it in the packaging I'd returned it in and included all my personal information, which is how he contacted me. Very bad Amazon!
You didn't even open the package knowing it contained a damaged item and just bounced it on, maybe hoping that customer wouldn't complain.
Will have to think about supporting Amazon in future. Oh, I tried to complain but my emails just bounced back. So.. Shapton 10/10, Amazon 1/10
The 1 is for processing my credit promptly
